Standards-Based InstructionStandardsScore™, Collaborative Learning’s standards-based instruction program, allows educators to easily link any worksheet, classroom activity, or test to standards, turning teachers daily authentic assessment of students into formative standards-based instruction. StandardsScore™ allows teachers to gather standards-based instruction data daily, in every classroom across the curriculum. Student performance can be shared and compared to standards across the school community, opening lines of communication with parent, student and teacher. When StandardsScore™ is used to track standards-based instruction, there are no surprises come report-card time as parents and students have access to the child’s assessment data throughout the marking period. Collaborative Learning is the only organization who can boast that our product, StandardsScore™, is the only standards-based instruction solution that allows teachers to easily capture student performance against standards on a daily basis in every classroom.
There is a great deal of research that supports standards-based instruction as an education technique. Standards-based instruction allows teachers and students to be on the same page by specifying how teachers and students will meet their education goals, including specific concepts, order, or instructional materials (Krueger & Sutton, 2001). In standards-based instruction, standards delineate what matters, provide clarity and a fixed point of reference for students and teachers, guide instruction so that it is focused on student learning, provide a common language to have conversations, help ensure equal educational opportunities, assist in identifying struggling students, and meet federal guidelines (Ohio Department of Education, n.d.).
At its core, standards-based instruction is designed to help establish what students should learn at each grade level. Standards provide a framework to the skills, concepts, and knowledge that should be attainable to students. Not only does standards-based instruction help teachers establish goals early; it also provides a launch pad for fair assessment and expected outcomes. Standards-based instruction helps eliminate achievement gaps by following a model that builds on each standard as it is taught. Standards provide clear and consistent expectations for each student and provide a consistent guide for instruction and evaluation of student work for all teachers.
When a standards-based instruction model is adopted, many teachers don’t know where to turn. In a changing educational landscape many, if not all, processes are changing, from teaching techniques to lesson planning. Collaborative Learning Inc. recognized the challenge of implementing standards-based instruction by creating our Curriculum Improvement Suite™ which consists of Curriculum Mapper™ with the Instruction Planner™ interface and StandardsScore™. Curriculum Mapper™ allows teachers to create and document master planned curriculum and align all parts of that curriculum. Educators can attach any materials used in the classroom to their curriculum maps, creating a standards-aligned library of curriculum materials for standards-based instruction.
